Cannabis is sold in preset denominations. You may have heard some of them before – gram, eighth, quarter. But a quarter of what? What do these numbers mean in practical terms? What does a gram, or a quarter, or an eighth, look like? Good questions.

When people talk about the quantity and price of a given amount of cannabis, the baseline denominator is an ounce. So when you see pricing for eighths and quarters, those are 1/8th’s or 1/4th’s of an ounce, respectively. Let’s put that into perspective.

Note: because cannabis buds are natural products that vary in density and composition, the appearance of a set weight may vary slightly from strain to strain, and even crop to crop. This isn’t meant to be a hard-and-fast rule, just a general guide for “eyeballing it.”  Each bag, jar, or bottle will look slightly different, and that’s okay.

What is a Gram of Weed?

A gram is the smallest amount of cannabis that you can reasonably expect to purchase from a caregiver or dispensary. If you aren’t sure whether you’ll like a certain strain, a gram is a perfect amount to give it a test drive without over-committing yourself.

For reference, a pre-roll from the dispensary typically weighs in around a gram, and hand-rolled joints will range from .25 gram pinners to 1+ gram cones. Grams of cannabis flower will cost anywhere from $7-15, making them one of the least efficient quantities to purchase from a cost-saving perspective.

This is also true of organic hemp flower from places like Canna Comforts: one of our favorites, 24K, runs about $7 per gram for high-CBD, low-THC strains. Similarly, this Delta-8 Purple Kush from Vida Optima runs for around $6.80 per gram

A gram is a great amount for testing a new strain by packing a one-hitter for just enough to get an idea of the flavors and effects of a particular strain or crop.

What is an Eighth of Weed? (3.5 Grams)

An eighth is 1/8th of an ounce and is equivalent to 3.5 grams. It’s the most common weight purchased by cannabis consumers due to its affordability and convenience.

Eighths are ideal for casual to moderate smokers. An eighth can be rolled into roughly 7 half-gram joints or 14 quarter-gram bowls. The price of an eighth of cannabis can vary greatly around the country, but they generally range from $25-$55 in Colorado/California to upwards of $60 on the East Coast (you can pick up an eighth of Canna Comfort’s 24K organic hemp flower for only $25).

I’ve discovered you can even fit an eighth of rolled cannabis in a safety case.

What is a Quarter of Weed? (7 Grams)

A quarter – sometimes referred to as a quad – is 1/4th of an ounce and weighs in at 7 grams. Buying by the quarter is also very common as it allows heavier smokers to really get acquainted with a strain – an eighth can go quickly!

At the quarter ounce level, some minor price breaks can sometimes be seen (depending on the specific dispensary or caregiver) but don’t expect them.  Depending on your area, a quarter ounce of cannabis can run anywhere between $50 to $100.  A quarter of hemp flower will generally run around $50.

Canna Comfort’s excellent 24K is only $45 per Quarter.

What is a Half Ounce? (14 Grams)

A half-ounce equates to 14 grams of cannabis. Substantial price breaks, in terms of price per gram, typically begin at the half-ounce quantity. For reference, many infused butter/oil recipes (for edibles) call for a half-ounce of dried cannabis.

You are absolutely free and able to cook with less, just be aware that, depending on your recipe, it may lower the potency of the finished edibles.

What is an Ounce of Cannabis? (28 Grams)

An ounce of cannabis (or an ounce of anything, for that matter) weighs 28 grams. Also known as a zip, buying by the ounce is the most cost-effective way to purchase legal cannabis. In fact, many dispensaries and caregivers offer ounce specials. If you are a daily cannabis or hemp flower consumer, ounces are the way to go.

For reference, Canna Comforts’ Suver Haze strain runs only $85 for an ounce.

Pro Tip: Grind Your Cannabis

For slower-burning joints and bowls (aka getting more out of your herb of choice), it is imperative that you grind your cannabis into small, even bits.  Doing this by hand can be a tedious task, so we recommend investing in a quality grinder that suits your needs and smoking style.

There are a variety of grinders designed to do this – check out our guide to the Best Weed Grinder to find one that matches your needs! you can check out.

Or, check out Delta-8 a hemp-derived cannabinoid that causes mildly psychoactive effects.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

Start with a gram or eighth to try a new strain – It might cost more per gram, but you won’t be stuck with a bunch of a strain that doesn’t work for you!

Price breaks generally start at the half ounce, the weight required for most infused butter/oil recipes (making that batch of brownies you’ve been contemplating a bit more economical).

Buying by the ounce is the most cost-effective, especially if you’re a daily cannabis or hemp flower consumer.
