Smell (Irrelevant to effects)
There really isn’t much of a smell to NutraCanna’s CBD Hemp Oil (1000mg) within the bottle — perhaps a subtle buttery scent from the MCT oil, but little to no botanical astringency or bitterness. The oil is unflavored and its isolate-based formula ensures it is free of THC. This also means that it excludes the terpenes, flavonoids, and other phytochemicals responsible for much of the scent and flavor of full-spectrum hemp extracts.
Taste (Irrelevant to effects)
The flavor of the oil is super subtle and highly palatable. It’s subtly nutty, with a buttery note lent by the MCT oil in the formula. This oil is, hands-down, our favorite for adding to foods and beverages because it blends so well with anything you drop it into. It blends easily into smoothies, sauces, or dressings for dispersal and easy digestion without altering the flavor profile of your food.
The oil is clear, fluid, and draws up easily into the included dropper. It blends in easily to food and beverages and doesn’t leave any lingering film or flavor on the soft tissues of the mouth after dosing. Overall, it’s pleasant to use and one of the most versatile CBD oils we’ve tried to date.
While the dropper does make it simple to eyeball a half-milliliter serving, we found ourselves wishing for a graduated dropper for more precise dosing. It’s a small detail that really doesn’t matter in the grand scheme of things, but we feel like it would be helpful (especially in the smaller-than-average bottle and slightly different dosing from other CBD oils).
Effects (Onset, Duration, Intensity)
Like most products primarily absorbed through the digestive system, the oil takes a little while to take effect. We felt relief between 40 and 60 minutes from ingestion on average, but your personal mileage may vary here depending on what you’ve eaten (or not eaten), your metabolism, and other individual factors.
Half a milliliter (or half a dropper) contains 33.5 mg of organic CBD isolate, which is a substantial dose for most of us. All of our testers, even those of us used to higher doses, felt the relaxing, pain-relieving effects of CBDfrom this product. One of our testers who is accustomed to taking closer to 15-20 mg per day reported feeling a little drowsy at this dose, but not to the point that they couldn’t function. If you’re comfortable with a lower dose, you could take a quarter of a dropper (which contains 16.75 mg of CBD) instead of the half.
On the other end of the spectrum, some of our other testers needed to increase their dose to a full milliliter (67 mg) for complete symptom relief. If this is you, take what you need to alleviate your symptoms. CBD carries no risk of overdose or intoxication, even at extremely high doses.
We experienced relief from symptoms relating to chronic pain, inflammation, anxiety, and depression for about 8 hours from dosing, which is in line with most long-acting CBD products. We were pretty evenly split in our test group: some of us experienced all-day relief from symptoms, while others needed a second dose in the evening. Feel free to choose the dosing strategy that works best for you.
We found this CBD oil, like most CBD products, to be most effective for treating chronic pain, as opposed to the severe, acute pain caused by injury or some urgent conditions. If we’re discussing pain on a 10-point scale, with one being no pain and ten being so much severe pain that death would almost be preferable, we found the oil effective in treating pain in the 7 and below range. At higher levels, we found the severity and sharpness of pain greatly reduced, and at lower levels, the pain could be eliminated entirely.
Best used for
We had success in treating a variety of symptoms using this oil, ranging from chronic pain and inflammation to muscle spasms to anxiety to low mood to sleep disturbances. We especially like this product for providing a “maintenance dose” of CBD for lasting symptom relief, reducing the severity of symptoms over time. It’s also kind of nice that such a little bottle packs such a punch, allowing the same dosing in a smaller product volume.
We also experienced good results treating menstrual pain with this CBD oil — it worked for those of us with fairly normal periods as well as those of us who manage conditions like PCOS and endometriosis that tend to cause more painful periods. As a general rule (and especially when dealing with more severe pain), we had the best results when we increased our dose of CBD in the 3-5 days leading up to the start of our cycle, continuing this higher dose to the end of our cycle. We found that menstrual pain (and associated symptoms like bloating, moodiness, anxiety, and general discomfort) was greatly reduced with this dosing strategy.
Best used with (Complimentary Product)
We love this oil as a systemic product that provides full-body, all-day symptom relief. That said, it does take a little while to take effect. If you’re seeking a faster-acting form of CBD, you might consider something like the CBD tablets offered by NutraCanna. Since they’re absorbed through the soft tissues of the mouth, they reach the endocannabinoid system much more quickly than the oil, which is absorbed into the bloodstream through the digestive system.
If pain or physical tension is one of the main symptoms you’re looking to address, you might also benefit from a topical product like a pain cream. Topicals can be used at the site of pain to address inflammation and soothe discomfort directly, working in tandem with your systemic dose to provide targeted symptom relief.
Each 15 mL bottle contains 1000 mg of organic CBD isolate and costs $84, yielding a per-milligram price of $0.08 — reasonable, considering the dosage and quality of the product. Each .5 mL dose contains 33.5 mg of CBD, which works out to a per-dose price of roughly $2.81. In terms of cost, this is pretty in line with other products of comparable strength and quality.
Next to other isolate-based CBD oils, we feel that NutraCanna is a worthy competitor. We like the idea of dosing with smaller quantities of product than traditional tinctures, the oils are affordable next to similar products and, like each of NutraCanna’s products, they meet our CBD Buyer’s Guidecriteria for quality, purity, and potency.
