Smell (Irrelevant to effects):
The scent of the syrup is tropical and fruity. The predominant smell is sweet orange, with notes of strawberry, pineapple, and maraschino cherry sweetening the tang of the citrus. The flavor is advertised as Fruit Punch, and so far we’re hopeful.
Taste (Irrelevant to effects):
We’ll be honest, this syrup isn’t the smoothest going down. The first flavor is sweet and fruity, predominantly strawberry but with a healthy dose of citrus and pineapple as well. This is quickly overtaken by a powerful and, to be frank, a bit cloying sweetness that tapers off into a quite bitter aftertaste.
The aftertaste doesn’t last long, mercifully, but it is notable and unpleasant. We chalked up the bitterness to the proprietary herbal blend, which likely contributes to some of the rough finish. A glass of water worked to dispel the taste, but if you’re extra sensitive to it a few sips of fruit juice or tea can also help ward it off.
True to its name, this product is pretty viscous, but not overly so: think somewhere between simple syrup and pure maple syrup. It gives a lovely meniscus curve when measured (hello, sophomore chemistry class!) and retains some of the bubbles left over from shaking the bottle before use. It’s a bright pinkish-red in color and could stain clothing or upholstery, so be careful when measuring and consuming this product.
Effects (Onset, Duration, Intensity):
Considering the oral nature of this product, it needs up to an hour to kick in. Generally, it took about 45 minutes for us to feel its effects. True to its name, we felt pronounced relaxation as the product took effect. Our minds relaxed, thoughts slowed down, and we were able to focus more easily. We also noticed a pronounced physical relaxation, including relief from chronic joint and muscle pain.
We felt the effects of the product for 6-8 hours, making it a good product for both intense daytime relaxation and insomnia relief. The syrup is formulated specifically to aid relaxation and induce sleep, but some consumers with severe anxiety may find it beneficial to use during the day, especially as an addition to an existing CBD regimen to treat acute anxiety. Unless you are extremely anxious or in severe pain, this product may be a bit heavy for day-to-day use.
Best used for:
Since a single dose contains 25 mg of CBD (and we should note that the product is available in higher dosage strengths according to your needs), this product is geared more at providing intense symptom relief. We found it especially beneficial for soothing anxiety symptoms and easing insomnia, but it would also work well for severe pain and inflammation. If you find yourself in need of a high-dosage CBD product that provides long-lasting relief, this relaxation syrup might benefit you.
We should note a few potential caveats: first, the syrup contains 60 calories per dose, largely due to the sucrose it contains. Consequently, it may not be ideal for people looking to watch their blood sugar or carb-conscious.
Also, the proprietary herbal blend used in the product contains Melatonin, L-Theanine, White Willow Bark, and Turmeric and has implications for some consumers with special concerns. There is insufficient evidence to demonstrate that L-Theanine is safe for use by pregnant and breastfeeding women, and White Willow Bark may pose some risks to the fetus as it behaves similarly to aspirin. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, skip the herbal ingredients and opt for pure CBD or full-spectrum CBD products without herbal enhancement.
Because of the blood-thinning properties of White Willow Bark, this product should not be consumed immediately prior to surgery. Doing so could cause excessive bleeding during surgery. If you are having major surgery, plan to discontinue this product about 48 to 72 hours in advance of the operation.
Best used with (Complimentary Product):
Since this relaxation syrup is a systemic product, it may not target pain or inflammation as well as something more localized. To pinpoint symptom relief exactly where you need it, try a topical like a mentholated pain rub to relieve inflammation at the site of pain while the syrup works from within your body.
A bottle of Hemp Extract Relaxation Syrup will run you $19.99, which works out to about $5 per dose and approximately $0.19 per milligram. This isn’t outlandish for an oral product, especially one that contains such a high dose of CBD. We should also note that the price per milligram comes down a bit when the product is purchased at higher dosage strengths.
There are a number of high-dosage CBD products on the market, but we like this relaxation syrup from Nature’s Script because it contains no THC whatsoever. This makes it an excellent alternative to full-spectrum products for people looking to avoid THC in their CBD products. This hemp syrup is safely and responsibly made and passes our CBD Buyer’s Guide test for quality and purity.
