The Product Rundown: General Thoughts
There are a lot of positives to this product, there really are. The flavor is outstanding. We tried the mango flavor and it’s far and away our favorite we’ve sampled to date. The product is available in a generous bottle that would last many, many vape sessions and is easy to refill a reusable vape cartridge with (the nozzle is long enough to direct the liquid into narrow openings, making for mess-free filling). Since the product doesn’t come in a pre-filled cartridge, you can use it to create your own custom blend with other flavors and use it with sustainable, reusable vape cartridges.
The CBD itself is of high quality as well: like all Nature’s Script products, the starting hemp material is non-GMO, organically grown, and sustainably cultivated. The flower is then batch tested for purity and potency before its CBD is extracted using an environmentally friendly supercritical CO2 method. Since Nature’s Script uses only pure CBD isolate to make their products, they are certified free of THC. While there’s a lot to like about this product, one ingredient gives us pause: PG.
Why We Don’t Recommend This Product
While there are plenty of good things about the product, we can’t fully recommend any vapor product that contains PG, no matter how much we like everything else about it. PG, the common abbreviation for propylene glycol, is a common ingredient in many food and cosmetic products. While it’s generally recognized as safe by the FDA for these purposes, emerging research suggests that PG may be hazardous to your health when used in a vaporizer.
Recent studies have shown that, while it is generally safe for oral ingestion and topical application, the high temperatures used in vaporizers cause PG molecules to break down into toxic compounds like formaldehyde and arsenic. Not only are these chemicals toxic to humans in large quantities, but they are also known carcinogens.
While more research is required to know the exact temperature threshold at which this breakdown occurs, we do know that long-term exposure to carcinogens raises your risk of cancer and other diseases. We also know that vaping PG, particularly at the high temperatures used by many popular vaporizer models that produce dense, thick clouds of vapor, increases your risk of exposure to harmful carcinogens, and long-term use could elevate your risk of cancer just like smoking tobacco.
It is true that we do not currently have the same volume of data on PG in vape products that we do for, say, smoking cigarettes. However, we believe that the existing information available about PG in vapes is sufficiently compelling to keep us from using vape products that include PG in their ingredients. Unfortunately, this rules out all of Nature’s Script’s vapor products.
Is the Issue With the Brand As a Whole, Or Just This Product?
There are so many things we like and support about Nature’s Script as a brand. Their commitment to sustainable hemp cultivation, pure products, and tested potency are commendable, as is their THC-free product line that serves consumers who need to avoid THC for employment, legal, or personal reasons. They carry many products that we really enjoy: their tinctures are excellent, as are their CBD gummies (shown in image below) and relaxation syrup. They also carry a good pet-friendly CBD oil.
The issue is with this specific product, or, perhaps more accurately, with Nature’s Script’s choice to use PG in their vape products. We really enjoyed this product for many reasons, but because it contains PG as the second ingredient, we can’t recommend it wholeheartedly and don’t feel good about reaching for it regularly.
Alternatives: What We’d Use Instead
If you are looking for pre-filled CBD vape cartridges or vape pens without PG, we recommend the ranges offered by CBDistillery and Ambary Gardens. CBDistillery takes the advantage in terms of flavor variety, but both lines are free of VG and PG, making them safer for vaping, especially at high temperatures.
If you need something specifically THC-free, we recommend the 99.9% pure CBD isolate from Ambary Gardens. The product comes in a crystalline powder form and can either be dabbed (using either a traditional rig or a specially-designed vape pen) or mixed with your own carrier oil like MCT or hemp seed oil to create a custom vape oil or tincture.
Alternatives: What We Like From Nature’s Script
Nature’s Script carries many other products that are worth trying. While there isn’t a directly comparable alternative available from the brand that doesn’t contain PG, there are other systemic products that may be beneficial. We especially like their CBD gummies and their tinctures, which are both available in varying dosage strengths. The gummies come in a mixture of flavors, and the tinctures come in both peppermint and watermelon flavors.
For consumers in need of higher doses of CBD for relief from severe symptoms, we recommend the Relaxation Syrup (shown in image below) from Nature’s Script. It contains 25 mg of CBD per dose and can provide a boost throughout the day, especially if you find your symptoms are not fully alleviated at lower doses.
There’s a lot that we love about this product, and if the PG were eliminated, we’d feel differently about recommending it. Our hope is that, over time and with continued feedback from consumers and the CBD community at large, companies will start to reject PG in their vape products in favor of safer ingredients. Vaping is a comparatively new phenomenon in terms of the science available on the topic, and we feel a responsibility to pay attention to current studies in the interest of consumer safety. We cannot, in good conscience, recommend a product that includes an ingredient shown to be unsafe when used as directed, no matter how good it is in any other aspect.
