Smell (Irrelevant to effects)
Similar to the other products in their line, the Joy Organics CBD Face Serum reflects the citrus chamomile oil it contains. The overall scent is light, refreshing, and clean, with the most notable scents being lemon and orange. It’s not detectable for very long after application, even to sensitive noses so you won’t end up with a headache.
Taste (Irrelevant to effects)
As an external, topical product that’s meant for skin, this serum shouldn’t be tasted. Please do not ingest!
The product is opaque and slightly off-white in color, with a subtle warmth to it. It’s gel-like in consistency, but it has some characteristics of a liquid, too: when pumped onto the fingers, the product will slide around on a clear trail of product if tilted. It’s not the easiest topical in the world to handle, but it’s still easier to use than an oil or other liquid serum.
When applied to the face, the serum absorbs very quickly and easily, without leaving behind a residue or greasy feeling. There is a subtle tackiness to the skin for a little while after use, but this only lasted about 15 minutes for us. Afterward, we were left feeling soft, smooth, and supple.
Effects (Onset, Duration, Intensity)
In the short term, this serum moisturized our skin and left it looking plump and hydrated. We were soft to the touch for hours after use (morning or night), and the product can be added to the day cream for extra hydration throughout the day if your skin is extra dry.
By the end of our first week using this serum (as part of the full skin care line from Joy Organics), our skin was noticeably improved — dark spots and hyperpigmentation were reduced, inflammation and redness were alleviated, acne spots had gone down in size and severity, and our skin looked smoother and more hydrated.
Dry spots diminished or faded entirely, leaving our skin more hydrated than it’s been since we were actual children (long before the ravages of puberty). We were very pleased with the effects of the product over time — while it works well on its own, it’s much more powerful when used as part of a complete CBD skin care routine.
Best Used For
We liked this product just as much for dry skin as we did for oily skin. This is because, unlike oil-based moisturizers, this serum uses a balance of water-based hydration and humectant ingredients to moisturize the skin on contact while attracting more moisture to the face throughout the day, maintaining that hydration.
While this product works very well for generally unproblematic skin, we think it really shines when used on skin that’s prone to inflammation, redness, and texture problems. If you struggle with inflammatory conditions like rosacea, cystic acne, or eczema, this serum is gentle enough to soothe redness and reduce pain and inflammation visibly without irritating sensitive skin.
The serum is also effective against hyperpigmentation when used over time. Hyperpigmentation, the dark spots of skin pigmentation that occur as a result of inflammation, is especially common among people of color but can affect anyone. The CBD within this serum helps reduce inflammation in hyperpigmented areas, allowing excess pigment to disperse and reducing the look of dark spots over time — as well as preventing new spots from forming.
Best used with (Complimentary Product)
This product provides an intense, localized dose of CBD straight to your facial skin. While it’s a potent shot of hydration and anti-inflammatory benefits on its own, it’ll be more effective when used with the complete skin care bundle by Joy Organics. You’ll get the most out of the serum as part of a regular CBD skin care regimen, as opposed to using the product solo.
If you’re looking to really make the most of your CBD skincare routine, consider pairing your topical products with a systemic dose of CBD via an oil or softgel. The ingestible CBD will work from within while your skin care routine improves the condition at the surface, further soothing inflammation and reducing redness.
The product contains 90 mg of CBD in the 30 mL bottle, which works out to about 3 mg of CBD per milliliter. At $99.95 for the bottle, this serum isn’t exactly a bargain. That said, it is priced comparably to many of the high-end skin care products we’ve tried (like La Mer, La Prairie, and Tatcha) — and it’s very effective. You can also take the price per product down considerably by purchasing the entire line in the skin care bundle (shown in image below) from Joy Organics. The initial cost will be higher, but you’ll save both per item and per milligram of CBD by bundling the products together.
As far as high-end skin care products are concerned, this line from Joy Organics has earned a special place on our counter. In the beauty world, finding a product that works consistently across different skin types is a rare find. Add to that Joy Organics’ commitment to transparency and independent testing, and we think there’s a lot of value in these products despite the hefty price tag.
CBD is quickly becoming increasingly popular in the skincare world, and for good reason — its anti-inflammatory properties work powerfully against the puffiness and redness so many of us struggle with, and the compound helps bring skin back to baseline by normalizing excessively dry or oily skin. Ulta recently introduced its first CBD skincare brand, and more are sure to follow.
That said, we’ve noticed a pattern with these brands: they tend to operate like beauty companies rather than CBD providers, which allows them a lot more leeway with the claims they can make. For cosmetic products, the rules are a bit different, and companies don’t necessarily have to tell you how much of an active ingredient is in a product.
For all intents and purposes, this means that a company can claim CBD content even if it doesn’t contain enough of the compound to be therapeutic. If you’re into cosmetic and beauty products in any capacity, you’ve likely been frustrated by products that don’t live up to the claims on the packaging — this is part of the reason why.
To us, the advantage provided by Joy Organics is clear. Since the productis batch-tested (and those results are publicly available), you know exactly how much CBD is in what you’re buying. Additionally, you know that the CBD is responsibly derived from organic, non-GMO hemp and contains no THC whatsoever. There are very few CBD skin care products on the market that can check all those boxes; Joy Organics meets our CBD Buyer’s Guide criteria for quality, purity, and potency.
