Smell (Irrelevant to effects)

CBDistillery CBDefine CBD Skin Care Cream (500mg)smells predominantly of lavender, with notes of rosemary and tea tree oil. The scent owes to the botanical extracts within the cream intended to amplify its effectiveness, providing antimicrobial and analgesic properties that boost the effectiveness of the CBD within. We really enjoyed the scent of this cream, which is natural and herbal without coming across as overly medicinal or bitter.

It does tend to linger a bit on the body, which we didn’t mind (and actually rather liked). That said, if you wear a scent that you don’t want the cream to clash with, you might consider giving it a few extra minutes to disperse before heading out for the day.

Taste (Irrelevant to effects)

As an external, topical product that’s meant for skin, this cream shouldn’t be tasted.

Consistency

The consistency of this cream is different from most any other topical CBD product we’ve tried in a really interesting way. The ounce of product in the jar is creamy, rich, and reflective of its oil-based composition, but it’s whipped up to a fluffy, cloud-like consistency. This is nice, as it helps make the product easier to dispense and apply without getting too much at once. It also helps the cream blend more easily into the skin, spreading better and aiding absorbability.

The cream itself is a golden yellow-orange, with a subtle greenish cast to it. The jar feels surprisingly lightweight considering the volume of product, likely due to the whipped texture of the cream. We should note that, if exposed to heat, the cream will melt down to something more closely resembling a traditional CBD salve, so make sure to keep it from hot places like cars or windowsills to preserve its consistency.

When applied to the skin, the cream absorbs quickly and easily, leaving little to no residue behind. After application, our skin felt soothed and hydrated, minus the greasiness often left behind by moisturizers and salves. We did note a sense of a barrier of sorts between our skin and the outside world, keeping in moisture and protecting skin.

The whipped texture of the cream also helps to stretch it a bit — a little goes a long way. Start with a small dab and increase from there as needed. For reference, we found a pea-sized amount would treat an area of skin about the size of a postcard liberally (and could be blended more thinly over an area nearly twice that size). Because of its high dosage strength, this is a good thing; there’s a hefty dose of CBD in that pea-sized glob.

Effects (Onset, Duration, Intensity)

We felt the effects of this cream pretty quickly after application — within about 5-10 minutes, and increasing over about 30 minutes from application. Our skin felt smooth, hydrated, and shielded from the elements immediately, as soon as the cream absorbed into our skin.

When applied to dry, itchy skin, the cream soothed inflammation and discomfort nearly on contact while creating a protective barrier that sheltered skin from the elements without feeling greasy. Within minutes of application, we noticed muscle and joint pain subsiding, improved range of motion in stiff joints, and relaxation of physical tension.

We felt the effects of this cream for 4-6 hours from application, which is in line with other high-potency CBD creams we’ve tested. The hydrating and protectant effects lasted about 90-120 minutes for most of our test group, but the pain relief and reduced inflammation continued for hours after, providing lasting symptom relief.

We found this cream especially beneficial for dry, flaky skin — it’s a bit heavy for use on the face (except maybe for spot treatments or people with exceedingly dry skin), but we experienced powerful symptom relief just about everywhere else, from dry patches on knees and elbows to redness and irritation on our skin. It’s effective against skin inflammation as well as muscle and joint pain, and we found it improved skin condition and healthwith continued use.

Best used for

This cream looks different from many of the other CBD creams and salves on the market, but we found ourselves reaching for it regularly from our first use. Its quick absorption and pleasant scent make it good for both evening use and daytime application. The cream alleviates symptoms of pain, inflammation, and itching in the short term and improves skin condition in the long term, reducing issues like swelling, hyperpigmentation, and scarring.

If you have very dry skin, you might like this for use on your face. However, most of our testers preferred to use it on the body, as it’s a little heavy for most skin types (and the coconut oil in the cream can cause breakouts in many people, especially with prolonged use). That said, it is good for spot treating dry spots, hyperpigmentation, and redness — just be mindful that it may clog pores, especially in acne-prone skin.

We used this cream to successfully treat a variety of symptoms, both at the surface of the skin and in the underlying muscles, joints, and tissues. It worked for pain, stiffness, and soreness related to injury, arthritis, autoimmune diseases, injury, and athletic recovery. We also like it for inflammatory skin conditions and itch relief — the antibacterial properties lent by the tea tree and lavender oils in the cream help keep skin protected while the CBD promotes healing and reduces pain.

Because of its high dosage strength, we like to have this cream on hand for intensive symptom relief. It’s effective against both mild and severe symptoms of pain, inflammation, redness, swelling, and hyperpigmentation — it’s become a go-to product in our cabinet and it’s made a notable difference in problem areas of our skin. We wouldn’t recommend it for open wounds, but it can help promote healing after the wound has closed itself off.

Best used with (Complimentary Product)

We love this CBD cream for concentrated, localized relief at the site of pain and inflammation. However, it will be more effective when coupled with a systemic dose of CBD like an oil or a gummy. The oral dose will address your symptoms from within while the topical provides targeted relief.

If you’re in need of a faster-acting dose of CBD, you might also consider a vaporizer. Unlike oral products, which are absorbed through the digestive system, vaporized or dabbed CBD enters the bloodstream through the soft, vascular tissue of the lungs (a much more direct route that yields quicker relief). Vaping CBD can be a beneficial way to alleviate symptoms quickly and effectively.

Value/Price

Each 1-ounce jar of cream contains 500 mg of organic CBD and costs $50. The per-milligram price is $0.10, which is reasonable for the dosage, formula, and quality of the product. Since it’s effective in small amounts, a jar will last a long time, even with liberal and frequent use. The price of the cream is comparable with other topical CBD products of similar strength.

Competition/Alternatives

In a market crowded with CBD salves and heavy ointments, we’re pleased to see new formulations like this one that test the boundary between an oil-based salve and a lighter cream. Like any other product, the formula may not be ideal for everyone, but we really enjoyed the skin-conditioning and pain-relieving properties of the cream. If your skin tends toward the dry side, you might like this cream.

The product is made with organic, non-GMO hemp and meets our CBD Buyer’s Guide criteria for quality, purity, and potency. The formula is made with beneficial botanicals and is nearly entirely plant-based (save for the beeswax), it’s suitable for even very sensitive skin, and it’s potent enough for even intense symptoms.
