The Product Rundown: General Thoughts
We were really thrilled about this product when we opened the box. The lack of flavor makes this CBD vape additive an incredibly convenient way to add CBD to your favorite existing vape juice or other oil-based product of your choice. We were excited to open the bottle to find CBDfx CBD Oil Vape Additive 300mg doesn’t have any smell at all, aside from the very light hint of earthy, hemp aroma.
The lack of smell is immediately reassuring since this oil is meant to be added to another vape oil with its own unique flavor and aroma profile. We actually didn’t taste the vape additive on its own, but when combined with our favorite vape juice, it didn’t seem to alter the flavor at all. It’s probably safe to say that this vape additive is nearly tasteless.
The small bottle of super concentrated oil naturally separates a bit so that a beautiful layer of golden oil forms around the top. Following the instructions on the label, we shook it before each use to blend the oils and plant materials together. The vape additive itself is thin enough that it can be easily measured, but not runny at all, which is important for this style of product, since loading your vape tank can or drip tip can sometimes be a messy process.
Plus, this CBD vape additive is sourced from wholesome, organic hemp material grown in Kentucky, just like all of CBDfx’s high-quality cannabidiol products. There is a lot to love about this additive, with it’s super convenient, flavor-free formula at the forefront of our brain, but we regretfully cannot recommend the product to others because of one small, yet crucial detail: the added PG.
Why We Don’t Recommend This Product
PG, or Propylene Glycol, is an ingredient commonly used in food, cosmetics, and other household products. Although it has been approved by most major health organizations, recent research suggests that it may have some toxic side effects when used in this manner, as an ingredient in a vaping product. When PG is heated to high temperatures, it may begin to degrade into other, much more harmful substances, like arsenic or formaldehyde, both of which are known carcinogens.
However, research has yet to identify the exact temperature at which PG begins to degrade into toxic chemicals, and many tout vaping as safe, just like the use of PG in skin care products. However, long term exposure to carcinogens is known to greatly increase the risk of cancer, which is why we can’t possibly feel great about recommending this product for everyday use.
In fact, despite the good experience we had when testing the product (on the lowest heat setting possible), we’re wary about using it again. Because of the possibility of adverse health reactions when vaping Propylene Glycol, we refrain from approving any product that contains PG, which unfortunately means we can’t approve this vape additive by CBDfx.
Is the Issue With the Brand As a Whole, Or Just This Product?
We definitely aren’t against CBDfx as a brand, but simply their inclusion of PG in this particular product. CBDfx still meets a number of our requirements, like sourcing all of their products from high-quality, industrial hemp out of Kentucky, or utilizing safe, controlled extraction methods (CO2) in the manufacturing of each product.
Plus, CBDfx has a large line (over 50 different CBD products) of innovative, industry-leading products in wild, exciting flavors and formulas. Because they provide access to such a wide variety of products and maintain a forward-thinking demeanor and unique position in the industry, they have alot more to offer than only this Vape Additive, and we are excited to test more of CBDfx’s products.
Alternatives: What We’d Use Instead
If you need pre-filled vape cartridges or single-use vape pens that are free of PG and other potentially harmful substances, we are happy to recommend a few tried and true brands. CBDistillery offers a wide range of disposable vape pens, like the Grand Daddy Purp CBD Vape Pen.
Ambary Gardens also offers a variety of pre-filled CBD cartridges that are free of PG and VG (vegetable glycerine). Joy Organics also offers some pre-filled CBD cartridge options, like this Lite Citrus Breeze CBD Oil Vape Cartridge that we loved.
Alternatives: What We Like From CBDfx
There are lots of other products from CBDfx that don’t include Propylene Glycol and may provide a better option for consumers. If you are in need of a fast-acting CBD alternative, CBDfx has a variety of tinctures that fit the bill. They offer a few unique flavors that are unlike tinctures you can get anywhere else, like Lychee Lemon Kiwi, Blueberry Pineapple Lemon, and Lemon Lime Mint. If sweet and fruity isn’t your style, you can also try CBDfx CBD Oil Tincture in its original, full spectrum form.
Although not quite as fast acting as this vape additive, CBDfx offers two options for CBD gummies, the regular flavor and one loaded with the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory power of Turmeric and Spirulina, that offer reportedly extended effects. Using these two products (the tinctures and edibles) together could help provide immediate results that keep symptoms at bay for 8 hours or more.
We definitely didn’t hate our experience with this product and were the Propylene Glycol replaced with a cleaner ingredient, we’d probably reconsider our review. Because vaping is still relatively new and research regarding the harms of certain ingredients is expected to continue to advance, we hope to see more brands openly concerned with the addition of PG in the future.
For now, we hope to at least help bring awareness to consumers about each and every CBD product that we review and provide alternatives that help each user create a safe, informed, and effective CBD regimen.
