Smell (Irrelevant to effects)
When you unscrew the metal tin, CBDfx CBD Calming Balm 150mg smells sort of tropical and floral. Upon further investigations, we found that the sweet and wholesome aroma is a blend of tea tree, lavender, calendula, chamomile, and other natural, plant-based ingredients. The smell is bright and refreshing, and lingers around for 2-30 minutes after application, but is only barely noticeable at the 30-minute mark.
Taste (Irrelevant to effects)
We didn’t taste it and wouldn’t recommend using this topical product anyway except externally. With such clean, natural ingredients, we can’t imagine it would taste terribly bad, but it probably doesn’t taste good, either.
This balm is solid in the tin but melts under the warmth of a fingertip. The balm feels thick at first, but works in smooth, and is easy to apply in a thin layer. A small amount spreads pretty far, and just a fingertip-sized amount was enough to cover a pretty large patch of skin, almost across our entire back.
It feels slightly oily at first but rubs in completely and the skin’s surface feels dry to the touch again immediately after application. It isn’t greasy and stays in place, so you shouldn’t have to worry about it affecting clothing.
Effects (Onset, Duration, Intensity)
We used this balm on a large, itchy rash across the back that was later identified as poison oak. Although the balm seemed to have no effect at first, the otherwise constant itching subsided after only half an hour. The balm needed to be reapplied every 2-3 hours to maintain the effects, however.
Another tester had a different use for the CBD balm and applied it to rough, calloused spots on his hands and feet. Though there were no immediate effects again, dry, rough skin looked and felt mostly renewed after four days of twice-daily applications.
As a final attempt to review the CBD-infused power of this balm, we applied it to a minor burn from carelessly handling our cast iron skillet, and we were truly impressed. The burning pain went away a few minutes after application, and the small burn had almost faded away after 4-5 hours, with no residual pain. The leftover burn mark was not inflamed, and we continued to apply the CBD balm every day until it healed entirely, which took about three days.
The duration of effects was similar to other tinctures we’ve tried. When managing anxiety during the day, one morning dose was enough to provide relief almost all day, and redosing may have been necessary after 7-8 hours if anxiety relief is needed all day. For managing more severe pain from a pulled shoulder muscle, redosing was necessary after about 4 hours. However, we noted that the effects of the CBD were very comparable to the previous treatment used, ibuprofen.
Best used for
CBD has a range of potential uses, but topical CBD products like this one offer a unique opportunity to treat ailments affecting the skin or that can be targeted through the skin, like joint pain and muscle soreness. Studies have shown that the transdermal application of CBD helps soothe pain and inflammation due to rheumatoid arthritis. Another study shows that CBD may work similarly to prevent nerve damage caused by inflammation or other symptoms due to osteoarthritis.
Because research shows that Cannabidiol may help regulate inflammation and sebum production, it may be useful for a range of skin care needs. For instance, studies have shown that CBD may improve symptoms of psoriasis. Many people use CBD topicals in their skin care routine to help manage acne, which is often caused by inflammation or to nourish and hydrate the skin. CBD may also have healing properties that help prevent infection, like as an antibacterial. Studies have shown that it reduces itching caused by pruritus as well.
Best used with (Complimentary Product)
This CBD balm can be used on its own to help relieve a variety of minor symptoms. However, the balm may be even more effective when combined with another high-quality CBD product. Depending on your needs, combining products can either improve or extend the effects of CBD.
When this balm is used alongside a tincture, like CBDfx Lemon Lime Mint CBD Tincture Oil, the effects may be more immediate and prominent. Combining this balm with a slower method, like CBDfx Spirulina and Turmeric gummies, can help extend the effects by several hours since the gummies take about an hour and a half to kick and often have longer lasting effects than other methods.
This little tin of CBD balm contains 150mg of CBD and costs about $40, which equals about $0.26 per milligram. For comparison, CBDistillery offers a CBDol Salve with 500mg of CBD for $60, or $0.12 per milligram.
When comparing this to many other types of products, the price seems a little high, but this balm stretches a long way. Another reason for the higher price point is the variety of high-quality, organic ingredients, like Roman and German Chamomile, Tea Tree oil, and more.
This product is of seemingly good quality, smells amazing, and delivers results. You can access all of CBDfx’s lab tests here, or by scanning the QR code on any product, to see the potency and purity report for this CBD balm.
