The One Hitter Pipe: An Underrated Yet Effective Weed Accessory

Don’t downplay the one hitter pipe. Much like a snub-nose .38 revolver, the one-hitter isn’t that intimidating at first glance, but it’s easy to conceal, nearly impossible to break, and reliably delivers kill shot after kill shot. It’s the Manny Pacquiao of the smoking world: it doesn’t look like much, but it’ll drop your ass in a flash if you fail to show the proper respect.

Trust me we’ve heard every negative about one-hitters out there—they’re cheap, they don’t hit like a bubbler or a bong, you’d rather smoke a vape pen—we get it. We acknowledge that it’s not always the best way to smoke. But the thing is, one-hitters are amazing smoking accessories because of everything they aren’t. They aren’t expensive. They aren’t big. They aren’t difficult to use. They don’t require a lot of cannabis to be effective. Below, we’ll run through a few of these benefits, in hopes of convincing you why adding a one-hitter to your smoking kit is a smart move. Like the Navy Seals always say, “Two is one and one is none” so why not add backup weed accessories to your 420 travel kit?

What is a one-hitter?

A one hitter is a pipe designed for, you guessed it, a single hit. Typically, this means a skinny, tubular pipe, with a mouthpiece at one end and a small bowl at the other. Because of their low-profile and convenient nature, one hitters are preferred by folks who live or travel in locale’s with particularly unfriendly marijuana laws. Fun fact: one-hitters have actually been around for thousands of years (they’re known as a sebsi in Morocco, kiseru in Japan, and a midwakh in the Middle East). Often referred to as a one hitter bat, one hitter cigarette, or one hitter dugout, they are ubiquitous in the smoking community.

  1. Easy & Convenient

No time to roll a joint? Packing a bowl at a concert or on a chairlift? The one-hitter is beyond intuitive and easy to use. If you have a small container full of pre-ground flower, you can just press the bowl of the one hitter firmly into the herb, scrape off the excess flower from the outside of the bowl, and then you’re good to go. Click here for in-depth info on exactly how to use a one hitter. Also, the one-hitter doesn’t necessitate the cleanup required by glass bongs, bubblers, and even bowls. Just tap out the ash, scrape out the resin, and boom, good as new.

  2. Discreet on the Go

A a sleek black one hitter is the definition of discrete, you’ll never notice it!

  3. Conserves Weed

Blazing on a budget? The one hitter will help you make the most of your Mary Jane. When hit properly, the one hitter is an extremely effective smoking method. Also, there’s very little weed lost, especially when you compare it to a joint or a blunt.

  4. Potent Hits

Did we already mention that the one-hitter hits remarkably hard? Easy to use and reliable, these pipes may look like featherweights, but they’re in a much higher weight class.

Types of One-Hitters:

There are a few types of one hitters on the market—I’ve even seen one hitters made out of animal bones. While I’m all for going primal, my preference is metal or glass.

The right combination of durability and discretion, the metal one hitter is our favorite way to smoke in the category. Don’t go with the cheap and clichéd cigarette camouflaged version, though—you’re not fooling anyone.

Glass is, of course, the best on the market when it comes to delivering clean flavor. However, they are easily broken. If you’re a glass purist, make sure you snag a Safety Case so that you aren’t left brokenhearted with a broken bowl.

Wood, Bone, Stone etc.

There are tons of other types of one hitters out there on the market—and while they make for fun novelty pieces, we don’t recommend them as everyday pipes, as they’re tougher to clean and don’t offer the crisp flavor of a glass or metal one hitter.

Ditch the Dugout: A Pipe Case for One Hitters, Pipes & Chillums

Whether you’re learning the ropes or you’re an experienced smoker, chances are that a chillum or one hitter is an essential item in your smoking stoner survival kit. For those who are unfamiliar, chillums and one hitters are slender, straight pipes with no carb (a third hole to regulate airflow). As the name indicates, these pipes only hold the amount of flower necessary for a hit or two, which is ideal for quick solo smokes and preserving your stash. One hitters are easy weed pipes to pack on the move, especially when you don’t have time to roll a joint.

dugout one hitter on the go

Regardless of whether you prefer glass, metal or acrylic chillums, it’s important to keep your one hitter protected and ready for use when on the go. Unfortunately, many people still rely on the obvious and outdated wooden dugouts invented 30+ years ago – those little wooden boxes that only hold a single gram of ground cannabis. Modern day consumers want the ability to carry both indica and sativa strains based on their needs, as well as a lighter, poker, one hitter, glass blunt, or small pipe. Unlike old school dugouts, the Safety Case is smell proof, durable, and able to carry multiple strains of cannabis. We will show you how it works with some of my favorite pieces.

One Hitter

The Hitter is perfect for those who require a piece that can keep up with their active and demanding lifestyle. The Hitter’s metal construction means you no longer have to worry about your pipe breaking if accidentally dropped off the chairlift or stepped on while hiking. We like to stock my smell proof Safety Case with a Hitter Pipe, Grinder Card, Tool and five Pebble containers. Each of these Pebble containers holds up to a half of a gram of ground cannabis. Ensure your Safety Case is always stocked with a poker – nobody likes a clogged Hitter!

Glass Blunt

If you have never used a glass blunt, we suggest you give it a try. These extendable glass pipes can be loaded with significantly more flower than a typical chillum or one hitter. Glass blunts fit perfectly on either side of the case and next to the pipe you can carry up to four Pebble containers loaded with ground flower. After toking, secure the glass blunt back in the Safety Case with the peace of mind that you’ll never break another piece of glass.

Those who enjoy chillums will appreciate the ability the configuration flexibility when packing their Safety Case. We like to arrange it with a combination of Pebbles, a Lighter and Grinder Card to create a complete smoking kit.

Small Pipe

The Safety Case can also accommodate small traditional pipes with room for additional flower storage. However, because of the case’s ultra-slim design, larger pipes will not fit as easily. Depending on how many Pebbles you carry and the size of your pipe, there is also room for your lighter, papers, crutches, and more. Once loaded, the Safety Case holds everything you need to smoke on the go.

Mix and Match with Larger Smell Proof Storage Options

In addition to your pipe, Black Rock has storage for all kinds of different things. Whatever your smoking preferences, the smell proof professionals at Black Rock have you covered. Ready to ditch your dugout?

Visual Guide: How to Use a One Hitter

One-hitters and chillums are a favorite among many smokers because they are compact, discreet, and easy to clean. Perfect for a quick solo smoke or a hit on the go, the small bowl size of most chillums ensures you conserve your cannabis and smoke efficiently. Storing and packing a one-hitter is surprisingly easy when you have the right tools. If you don’t have one, we highly recommend the new Marley Natural Taster, it’s very stylish.

  1. Grind and Collect the Material

Take your grinder card (or chamber grinder) and place it on top of an open Pebble container. Then, grab a good bud and gently rub it on the surface of the grinder card. The ground cannabis will fall through the holes into the container below for easy filling. You can use your finger to push through any remaining pieces. Some people are happy to just push the buds right into the top of their one-hitter whole, but we recommend you acquire a grinder. Your cannabis will burn more evenly, allowing you to get more mileage from your bud, and you will have a lower chance of clogging the piece. Here are step-by-step instructions and photos showing how to pack and smoke your one-hitter or chillum.

  2. Pack Vertically

Take the one-hitter and dip the bowl end into the Pebble, which is full of ground cannabis, and twist. You will likely have to perform this dip and twist action two or three times for a well packed, longer lasting bowl. You can use your fingers, the grinder card, or another flat surface to do a final pack of the bowl and remove any hanging bits of cannabis. Be sure not to pack the bowl of the Hitter too tight or you will inadvertently restrict airflow.

  3. Light and Inhale

Once the one-hitter has been packed, slowly bring the flame from a lighter or hemp wick towards the bowl and begin to inhale, drawing the flame into contact with the bud. This will create a cherry, allowing you to smoke the remainder of the cannabis in the bowl without further use of your lighter. We recommend a slow, smooth inhale and exhale to avoid scooby snacks and unnecessary respiratory irritation or coughing fits.

  4. Clear the bowl

After the entirety of the bowl has been smoked, you can blow out the ash or gently tap the hitter against a hard surface to expel the ash. In our experience, those methods are great for a preliminary clear, but they do not fully rid the air-pathway of that stubborn, sticky resin. That’s why we suggest always carrying a poker of some sort. Whether it’s a dabber, paper clip, toothpick, or dedicated poker tool, it’s an important piece to have in your cannabis arsenal.

  5. Save for Later

Are you ready to retire your outdated dugout for a smell-proof kit? These smell-proof smoking kits will completely replace your basic dugout with a discreet kit with plenty of room for a poker, lighter, grinder, and the ability to carry multiple strains at once. We like to use a safety case, which has everything you need to pack a one-hitter on the go.

Common Questions

What if I get ash in my mouth?

Try packing the bowl of your one-hitter a little tighter i.e. pack some more cannabis in there, or use a tamper to press down on the herb within the bowl. Follow Step 2 above until you cannot fit any more ground cannabis into the bowl. This issue is more prevalent with new or freshly clean one-hitters, as they do not have the sticky resin coating to prevent ash from making its way into your mouth.

How many hits can I take out of a freshly packed one-hitter bowl?

This will depend on your specific one-hitter and how large of an inhalation you take; however, our Hitter holds enough ground cannabis for 3-4 solid rips.

How much cannabis does the Pebble hold?

Half a gram per Pebble. If you’re carrying four Pebbles like the photo above, you’ll be able to pack your Hitter 20+ times.

Using Hemp Flower In Your One-Hitter

If you are seeking symptom relief without the intoxicating effects of THC, consider using organic, federally-legal hemp flower instead of traditional cannabis buds. The non-GMO, sustainably grown, batch-tested hemp flower from Canna Comforts smoke and vape beautifully and provide a full-spectrum dose of beneficial cannabinoids in each flavorful hit.  We especially like Special Sauce (shown in image below) and Suver Haze (read our review OR just buy it), but they carry a diverse array of strains that look, feel, smell, taste, and vape just like the top-shelf cannabis strains that inspired them, minus the intoxicating effects of THC – so you can decide which you like best!
